Three Phase Rectifier
A three phase
rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current
to direct current. Three phase rectifiers have many uses such as
detectors for radio signals and are also used as components for power
supplies. The three phase rectifier is generally made of vacuum
tube diodes, solid state diodes, mercury arc valves and several other
components.
The
three phase rectifier operates on
the principle that current passes through them freely. The
direction that the current passes through is in one direction and hardly
ever in the other direction if at all. When using heavy current with the
three phase rectifier, they are quite often equipped with some
sort of cooling devices like fins or heat sinks. The three phase
rectifier is commonly used in power supplies for various
electronics.
There are two kinds of mechanical
three phase rectifiers. One that is used with a polyphase
alternating current is a rotating switch which is synchronized with the
alternating currents that are fluctuated. The other type of three
phase rectifier is one that uses synchronized vibrating to change
single phase alternating current into a pulsating direct current.
Both of these types of three phase rectifiers have pretty much
been replaced by solid state devices.
Some sort of three phase power must
be used with a three phase rectifier. A phase converter would be
a commonly good choice to use. The phase converter simply takes the
single phase power source and converts it into true three phase power.
The phase converter must have it's own 3-phase hybrid generator with
power factor correction though, in order for it to be a full true three
phase power. The true three phase converter allows three phase equipment
like the three phase rectifier to run optimally because of the
constant flow of power that is achieved. A more balanced power load is
created with an uninterrupted flow of current because of the true
three phase converters alternating currents.
