Three Phase Spindle
The
three phase spindle is a machine tool that is used in many
different applications. The three phase spindle is used in
metalworking and woodworking. The three phase spindle is often
combined in a milling machine, a lathe or is sometimes called the screw
machine.
A
three phase spindle has a single
spindle but also can have multiple spindles. A three phase spindle
with multiple spindles, contains a bar of material that is being
machined simultaneously. A common three phase spindle often
has a configuration of six spindles doing the work. A cage that holds
these six bars of material indexes after each machining operation is
complete on the three phase spindle. A bar of material is fed
through the three phase spindle and the face of the bar is machined at
that time. Shaping is done on the three phase spindle on the
outside of the bar, the bar is then drilled and then the workpiece is
cut off.
When a three phase spindle
machine has a single spindle, the above operations are performed
sequentially with four cross slides that take their turn to perform the
operations. This is unlike the multiple three phase spindle that
performs the work simultaneously at each different station as described
above. The three phase spindle machine with multiple spindles is used
for doing large manufacturing jobs as many more pieces are produced at
one time which makes the three phase spindle machine much more
economical.
The three phase spindle
machine should be operated safely and efficiently and to do this, three
phase power should be used while operating it. A great choice would be
to use a true three phase converter. What this does is converts the
existing single phase power into true three phase power. To ensure that
the three phase spindle is getting true three phase power, make
sure that the three phase converter has a 3-phase generator with power
factor correction. This is very important because if it doesn't have the
generator with power factor correction, all your three phase spindle
machine is getting is just start-up power. This could result in
the three phase spindle machine breaking down or becoming severely
damaged. A true three phase converter uses it's own motor to generate
the third, high leg of power and then passes on the other two legs of
power that is provided by the single phase power source.
